The present blue bag-recycling program has grown from approximately 300 households in June of 1996 to approximately 550 households in June of 2003. Our goal for the year 2004 is to gain additional 100 households, giving us a 15% participation City wide.
Our new recycling products for this year will be to continue a mulch program, which was started last year as a trial. This program has returned approximately 1,000 cubic yards of leaves, chips and yard waste to the public for use in landscaping within the city. We anticipate with a little advertising of this product to return 2000 cubic yards of material within the next year.
Our second new product for recycling will be used oil, which we will be collecting in a 1,000-gallon container to be returned to oil haulers for recycling. This program will be open to the public, who may bring their used oil to the Public Works Shop for storage. This program can be provided for an annual fee of approx. $300 per year which includes pickup and transportation of materials. This program can, at a later date, include oil filters and antifreeze for an additional cost.
These programs will help with environmental protection plus return valuable products to the public along with helping the City reach it's recycling goals for the future.
