The Public Works Department is responsible for five divisions. They are Street Department, Sanitation Department, Cemetery Department, Animal Control Department and Special Projects Coordinator.


Street Department

The Street Department is responsible for the maintenance of 72 miles of public roads and right of ways and city owned property and buildings. This includes roadway surfaces, sidewalks, drainage, mowing, signs, building maintenance, street and traffic lighting and construction of roadways and buildings. Answering and reviewing complaints from citizens and planning solutions. Conducts meetings with contractors, engineers, on various projects. Works closely with State and City Planners on issues within planning region. Review construction and drainage plans for subdivision and site development for compliance to state and local standards, specifications and the inspection of it. Work closely with City, County and State Agencies on various projects within the City limits to insure compliance with local and State laws and regulations. (phone number and e-mail)



Sanitation Department

The Sanitation Department is responsible for collection of garbage (presently contracted to Waste Management, Gary Sanson - 967-2081), collection of household refuse, brush, leaves, Blue Bag Recycling Program, and also helps with mowing of City owned property.



Cemetery Department

The City maintains three cemeteries. Burial plots may be purchased at the offices of the Winchester Public Works Department.



Animal Control Department

Responsible for the capture and care of strays and unwanted animals.

Special Projects Coordinator

This employee is responsible for various city functions and projects as assigned. This employee also works with the South Central Development District, as well as, various State, local, and Federal agencies to help procure grants for city departments.
