MISSION STATEMENT

"To preserve and embrace the historic character of the Winchester Community"

PLAN:

Purpose: To preserve and embrace this historic character of the Winchester community.

Plan Preparation

1. The Winchester Historic Preservation Committee is a group of citizens who volunteer their efforts to assist the City of Winchester in historic preservation.

2. The Winchester Historic Preservation Committee meets monthly to develop ideas and collect information to preserve and embrace the historic character of Winchester.

Plan Development:

1. Identify homes and buildings of significant interest within the city boundaries of Winchester.

2. These homes and buildings will be developed into walking/driving tours for the purpose of education, preservation, and tourism.

3. Cemeteries within the boundaries of Winchester will be recognized. At a point in time, these will be identified and fenced.

4. Recognition of historic buildings in downtown area, with the exception of City Hall/Post Office will be deferred until appropriate time we will interact with other committees.

Implementation of the plan:
The Committee has designed and published a booklet giving detailed information on historic houses and buildings within the city limits of Winchester. This booklet is available for purchase at Winchester City Hall or from a committee member. The members are also currently researching and writing a historical narrative on the business houses around the public square in Winchester, which will cover the time period when the lots were first purchased shortly after the county was established in 1807 to the present.
