This Ginkgo Tree is a native of China and has fan shaped leaves. It was planted by the Templeton's of Winchester at their home just a few blocks from the downtown square. It was planted in 1959 and as the 10 foot granite monument reflects it could live to be 800 years old. Ginkgo has been used as food and medicine for more than 4,000 years. Traditional Chinese herbalists still rely on the plant for the treatment of asthma, bronchitis, and brain disorders. Often called a "living fossil", the magnificient Ginkgo tree itself is the last survivor of its botanical family. In fact, it is the oldest living tree species known to humankind, and individual trees have been reported to live as long as 1,000 years. The Ginkgo is widely planted today as an ornamental. |
