William
Murrell Travis, son of Charles Andrew and Sue Elizabeth Murrell Travis,
was born September 23, 1906 in Franklin County. He was the owner of the
288 Service Station in Winchester, which was named for its phone number,
and also owned and operated the Murrell Travis Insurance Agency for fifty-three
years. He never married. He owned farms in Harmony and on Sharp Springs
Road. He served as Mayor of Winchester from 1948-1957 and again in 1959-1961
and was a Franklin County Road Commissioner for six years. He died at
Franklin County Regional Hospital on July 1, 1983 and was buried in Winchester
City Cemetery. |
